I’ve come to understand one truth; your network is your net worth. Relationships, not just CVs, open doors. Connections, not just credentials, build businesses.
For over two decades, I’ve built businesses, advised startups, led community development projects, and mentored the next generation of leaders. And if there’s one strategy that has consistently helped me grow, personally and professionally, it’s strategic networking. But networking isn’t about collecting business cards or showing up to every event. It’s about showing up with purpose, building meaningful relationships, and being intentional about your growth.
Before you ask, offer. Before you pitch, connect. When you meet someone, think about how you can support their work, not just how they can support yours. Real networking is rooted in generosity. Ask meaningful questions. Share resources. Make introductions. When people see your sincerity, they remember you.

Your network should be diverse, not just in profession, but in perspective. Surround yourself with mentors, peers, and even mentees. Each brings a different layer of wisdom. I’ve learned as much from emerging entrepreneurs as I have from seasoned CEOs. Don’t just network up, network across and down, too.
Networking isn’t a one-time event, it’s a long-term relationship. Check in. Show up. Follow through. Authenticity builds trust, and trust builds opportunities. Be yourself. People do business with people they trust, and trust grows from consistency. Yes, attend the events. Yes, join the panels. But also, be willing to host your own table. I’ve created rooms when I wasn’t invited into others. Whether it’s, a business brunch, or a virtual summit, don’t wait for a seat. Build the table.

Be clear on what you need, whether it’s investment, mentorship, collaboration, or clients, and focus your networking efforts accordingly. Set intentional goals and track your progress. Networking with purpose yields results.
Effective networking isn’t about being everywhere, it’s about being in the right places, with the right people, for the right reasons. And as you grow, don’t forget to reach back and pull others forward.
